Fans were left bewildered and amazed yesterday, when MSD, a man of few words on his official Instagram profile “mahi7781” posted,“Thanks. Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. From 19.29 hrs consider me as retired. MSD aka ‘Mahi’ became the household name after his magical performance that he gave in his entire career. He became the pride of his hometown Ranchi and of his country and succeeded in winning over the generations of cricket fans in his career span of 16 years. Let’s look at his outstanding journey, from a small-town boy to becoming a champion.
Made his Debut in Ranji at 18
MSD’S professional cricket journey started when he made his debut in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar for the 1999–2000 seasons at the age of 18 years. He scored 68 not out in the second innings of the match against Assam. While playing for Bihar against Bengal in the next season, MSD scored his maiden first-class century. From the next season, he started working as TT at the Kharagpur railway station and worked there till 2003.
CATCHING Ganguly’s Attention
MSD continued to play cricket while working as a TT, but instead of Bihar, now he was playing for Jharkhand. In the 2002–03 season, his performances included the three-half centuries in the Ranji Trophy and a couple of half-centuries in the Deodar Trophy. Eventually, he started getting recognition for his performance and as a hard-hitting lower-order batsman. Due to his amazing domestic performances, he got an India A to call up where he scored 362 runs in 6 innings at an average of 72.40. During this series, his performance received attention by then Indian Cricket caption Sourav Ganguly and coach John Wright.
On 23 December 2004, MSD made his ODI debut against Bangladesh, but unfortunately, he didn’t perform well and got out for a duck after facing 1 ball.
Finally Got His Place
After a few rough outings, MSD announced his arrival in international cricket with an ODI hundred. MSD was sent up at number 3 against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam and scored 143 runs in 123 balls with 15 fours and four sixes.
T-20 World Cup
In the inaugural T20 world cup, MSD was given the charge on a young side for the inaugural T20 World cup in South Africa. And the wicket-caption won the tournament by beating Pakistan.After the 1983 victory, this was India’s first World Cup win. Our caption, MSD had arrived!
Getting Married to Sakshi
On 4 July 2010, MSD married his girlfriend Sakshi Singh Rawat.
World Cup After 28 Years
India’s winning in the World Cup after 28 years under his caption ship was the biggest achievement in MSD’s career. It proved to be a turning point in his career.
MSD suffered his most dismal year as a skipper of the Indian team after four years into his limited captaincy. India even failed to qualify for the final of the Commonwealth Bank Tri-series.
MSD surpassed Ganguly’s 21 wins in a match against Australia and became India’s most successful Test caption.
Retirement From Test Match
Just like yesterday, on 30 December, 2014, MSD sent shock waves across his fan and the entire cricket fraternity when he announced his retirement from Test career.
Stepping Down as Captain
On 4 July 2017, MSD announced his decision to step down from the limited over the captaincy, thereby, paving the way for Virat Kohli to take over in all three formats.
MSD was part of the Indian team that reached the semi-final of 2019, hosted by England and Wales, which is now believed to be his last 50-over World Cup.
And now the outstanding journey of MSD came to an end in a much-unexpected manner.
